Lucille's Methods of Battling Jet Lag

I have a friend or perhaps I should say “nemesis” who lives inside my head. I call her Lucille. While Lucille has shown up before I don’t recall her moving in for this long or being quite so demanding.

Lucille is one of those tricky characters. She has a seductive voice that numbs me into believing she wants only the best for me.

“Oh honey, you deserve to watch just one more episode of 'Desperate Housewives.'”

“Don’t worry about your work. It’s just a little old fantasy. No one would miss you if you stopped.”

“Who needs to get dressed and put on lipstick anyway? It’s more convenient to crawl back into bed if you stay in your pj’s.”

“And unpacking? Why that would just mean more work for you, sweetie pie. All that washing and folding and putting away. Don’t worry your sweet little head over that...

"Now. Where’s the iPad? It’s time for more adventures on Wisteria Lane.”

Ugh. Lucille has been relentless since I returned home from my sailing adventure. She encourages me to get more rest and take good care of myself. All the while, blaming jet lag and professing good intentions. She sounds soooo convincing!

Lucille is a master at using me against myself. She knows I’m a strong advocate of self-care. Thus her attempts to convince me, it’s a good thing to take care of myself her way. She also knows how to pounce when I’m feeling vulnerable and a little misty-eyed… wrestling with the pinch of being another year older with boatloads of dreams left to fulfill… watching the changing of seasons and having to say good-bye to summer when I finally got a little color on my legs… seeing my friends continue around the world while I clean out a mildewed refrigerator and battle fruit flies in my kitchen… waking up to gloomy gray days after floating in the Mediterranean sun for two weeks.

Hmmm. Perhaps Lucille is trying to take care of me. She knows I long for tender loving care. Maybe this is her way of offering it to me. Methinks Lucille might not be as sophisticated and concerned as she sounds. Tender loving care is one thing, but wallowing in Life is Good pajamas and binging on Netflix is not exactly the quality of care I strive for, but man oh man… Lucille makes it sound very tempting!

Yesterday as I sat with a client (yes, I did get dressed and put on lipstick AND enjoyed our time together very much!) I said to her “Awareness is the first step toward change.”

Ha! Take that, Lucille! I’m on to you, big time!

Perhaps today I’ll even unpack… and as for Lucille? Well… Sweetie, your days are numbered… right along with the fruit flies and the dwindling sunshine.

Now, where is that iPad?

(This post inspired by Lucille and all of the dear peeps who think I live a perfect life and never have tough days... Sweeties, please remember... highs and lows are the stuff of a perfect life!!)
