#13 Let Your Undercurrent Purr

by guest author, Starla J. King

Most mornings I spend about 30 minutes in quiet meditation, sitting on my meditation mat facing the window that gently feeds me the sunrise as I repeat the mantra Om Namah Shivaya (honoring the Divine within me) and practice letting go of my thoughts as my heart gets priority.

Recently, while sitting peacefully in that heart space, the quiet was broken by the sound of intense chewing, swallowing, and more chewing, followed by a wet sneeze: my cat sitting on the windowsill wholeheartedly snacking on the plant.  Eyes still closed, I soon felt my other cat’s soft paws kneading my calf, interspersed with painful pricks as her claws dug in.  Then the deep rumbly purring began, followed by her burrowing under the blanket draped over my legs.

Yes, I could banish the cats during meditation, but they remind me of the purpose of meditation -- to provide a strong undercurrent of peace, compassion, and gratitude through the distractions of life.  They remind me to find my center and allow life to go on powerfully around me as I choose where to put my attention and when to allow my energy to get swept along with life’s current.

Purr or panic?  You get to choose.

Do you have a daily practice that gives you a strong undercurrent for life --  a way (or ways) to keep the peace, compassion and gratitude flowing as a foundation underneath all of your life’s movement?  If so, pay special attention to that practice today.  If not, what might you do each day to create a positive undercurrent of your choosing?  HINT: Cookies help. :)
