because art & poetry are essential

by Kayce Stevens Hughlett

Listen to the moon.

Feel the roots stretch

from the depths of your soul.

Experience.

Expand.

Go slow.

Your poet is not dead.

She is tending her growing pains—

roots traveling deeper,

highs expanding into the next realm.

The basket is stretching,

Grandmother Spider weaving more space

to hold it all.

Owl knows.

Bee, too.

Praying mantis waits to hatch.

Mama Robin lays more eggs in the eaves.

Even Wiley Racoon wants in on the action,

scavenging in the dark for forgotten and

misplaced treasures.

Dancing on the scrim, the hem, the edge alongside,

Goldfinch welcomes fairy dust and magic.

The Forest is rife with gifts that come in the night.

Rest, dear one. Close your eyes and

sip from this aqueduct of new life.

All is upside down.

All is backwards.

The place in-between.

Have you forgotten?

This is where you thrive.
